Members must comply with all local, regional, and national laws. The Legion may deny or revoke membership based on criminal history, especially violent crimes or crimes against children.

visibilityTrooping Etiquette

  • The Magic: Maintain the character illusion for fans and children.
  • Respect the IP: Members hold no claim to Lucasfilm intellectual property.
  • Spotters: Follow handlers/spotters whenever visibility is restricted.
  • Stay in Character: Follow Legion participation requirements and maintain professional public behavior.

ENROLLMENT GUIDE

Joining the 501st is straightforward: confirm eligibility, build a costume, submit photos, then apply. If you need help at any point, contact our Garrison Membership Liaison (GML).

1. Confirm Eligibility

You must be 18 or older and own a high-quality costume that matches a character in the Costume Reference Library. There are no membership fees; the Legion is all-volunteer.

Under 18? Visit Galactic Academy.
Building hero characters? Visit Rebel Legion.

2. Plan Your Costume Build

Most members build their own costumes. Start by joining a Detachment forum and connecting with your local unit for practical build support.

Important: Retail costumes are often not approvable as-is. Check with your GML before buying.

3. Choose Your Detachment

Select a costume path and join the detachment that matches your character. These forums are the best source for build standards and approval tips.

4. Prepare Approval Photos

  • Use a plain background (not convention photos).
  • Include helmet/mask on and off views (if applicable).
  • Provide full-body front, back, and both side photos.
  • Use strong lighting and high resolution.
  • Remove non-canon accessories and add-ons.
  • Ensure weapons meet Legion policy.

5. Submit Your Application

When your GML confirms your costume is approvable, submit the online membership application.

Approval can take several weeks because reviews are completed by volunteers.

6. Start Trooping

Welcome aboard. Once approved, you can begin troop events with the Capital City Garrison.
